Only those who have looted the country could only think about dacoits, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in Morbi in Saurashtra on Wednesday, in an obvious reference to Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi’s recent remarks that the Goods and Services Tax (GST) is ‘Gabbar Singh Tax’, recalling the iconic villain in the Bollywood blockbuster Sholay.
Morbi votes in the first phase of state Assembly elections on December 9.
Mr. Modi said the Congress was taking credit and political mileage for only minor schemes such as providing hand-pumps, while the BJP had brought major projects like the Narmada project for the benefit of people.
“The Congress’s development model was giving hand-pumps. For BJP, it is the SAUNI scheme (the Narmada water project for Saurashtra region), where we will fill dams of Saurashtra through huge pipelines.”
On Monday, Mr. Modi pushed the BJP’s campaign in Gujarat into high gear by addressing four back-to-back rallies.
The second phase of elections to the 182-member Gujarat Assembly will be held on December 14. Counting of votes will be on December 18.
