Prime Minister Narendra Modi must break his silence on attacks on Dalits ‘under his watch’, Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani said in New Delhi on Friday.
Be it Una, Shabbirpur or Bhima-Koregaon Mr. Modi has not spoken any word, he said.
On the case against him for ”inciting violence”, Mr. Mevani said. “I am being targeted by the BJP and the sangh as they have been shaken after being reduced to 99 seats in the Gujarat Assembly. They are trying to tarnish my image. No part of my speech is inflammatory nor did I visit Bhima-Koregon or participate in the bandh call in Maharashtra. If this is the treatment given to an established and elected Dalit leader, imagine the state of the poor Dalits in the country. How can they feel safe.”
A mega rally would be staged in Delhi with the participation of progressive student leaders, activists and Ambedkarites. “We will go with the Manusmriti in one hand and the Constitution in the other to the Prime Minister’s office and ask him which one he chooses,” he said.
”It is shameful that the Prime Minister talks about a digital India, looking for water on the moon and building colonies in Mars even as our society is struggling for equality,” he added.
